Vitamin C
CAS 50-81-7
Chemical Formula C6H8O6
Molecular Weight 176.12 g/mol
Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin. It occurs as a white or slightly yellow crystal or powder with a slight acidic taste. On exposure to light, it gradually darkens. In the dry state, it is reasonably stable in air, but in solution it rapidly oxidizes.
Ascorbic acid is found naturally in citrus fruits and many vegetables. It is an essential nutrient in human diets, and necessary to maintain connective tissue and bone. Its biologically active form, vitamin C, functions as a reducing agent and coenzyme in several metabolic pathways. Vitamin C is considered as an antioxidant.
